Cat Cuddles: A Guide to the Most Affectionate Breeds

Scottish Fold

Are you looking to adopt a new kitty or just wondering how you got so lucky with the cat you have? Cats are notoriously finicky and aloof creatures, but some breeds tend to be more excited to get close and personal and get a little loving. Of course any cat is going to have its own personality, but if you’re looking for a creature to be hugged and to hug back, check out these breeds and see if your local shelter has any kitties with these ancestors.

Scottish Fold

These cats often look like a stuffed animal ready to be snuggled. You can distinguish them by their folded over ears and their mellow countenance. These cats become very attached to their families and are great with kids— they want attention but they won’t get worked up if you have to leave them alone for the day.

Ragdoll

Ragdoll

These long haired cats are named after their tendency to go limp when picked up. They are a quiet breed, whose distinctive chirp meow often signifies a desire to be cuddled close. The Algonquin Hotel’s famous resident cat, Matilda III, was a ragdoll who lounged on a cat-sized chaise in the hotel lobby.

Tonkinese

This short haired breed looks similar to a Siamese, though they come in a wider variety of colors. This breed is deceptively muscular and incredibly smart. Tonkinese cats will develop close relationships with their owners and will pine when you are away, but they will also revel in your attention. This breed will spend hours cuddling, purring, and carrying on conversations with the people they love.

Birman

These long-haired creatures are distinguished by a silky coat, deep blue eyes, and paws that end in white “socks.” They are incredibly intuitive breeds that are quick to pick up on an owner’s bad mood or to become energetic when you are ready to play. They are also a great breed for children, as they have near infinite patience.

Kurilian Bobtail

This Russian kitty is rare in the United States, but may not be for long. They are becoming more and more popular for their charisma and ability to be trained. These cats, with their distinctive pompom tail, look wild but are always happy to be petted and ready to learn a new trick for their owners.

Burmese and Bombay

These two are here in the same slot because they are essentially the same cat in two different shades, with the Burmese a sable-grey and the Bombay a pitch black. These cats are great breeds for homes with infants or the elderly. They want nothing more than a lap and are always up for making new friends.

There are cats of all sorts who are ready for cuddles, but check out a few of these for a new instant friend!
